Specification guide

How to read a lighting specification

The terms you will see in our luminaire schedules and on manufacturer data sheets, in plain words.

CRI (colour rendering index)
How faithfully a light shows colours, on a scale up to 100. CRI 90 and above is the norm for homes and hospitality; 95 and above for retail, art and display.
Colour temperature (CCT)
Measured in kelvin: 2700K is warm, 3000K warm white, 4000K neutral white. Dim-to-warm drops from about 3000K to 1800K as it dims; tunable white adjusts between warm and cool white.
UGR (unified glare rating)
A glare scale from about 10 (no glare) to 30. Below 19 suits offices and workspaces; below 13 the light source is barely noticeable.
SDCM (MacAdam steps)
Colour consistency between fixtures. At 2–3 SDCM, lights next to each other look the same colour.
Flicker
Rapid changes in light output that tire the eyes and show on video. Low-flicker drivers keep it below 5%, and below 1% on some ranges.
Beam angle
How wide the light spreads: 8–15° for accents and artwork, 24–36° for general accent light, 60° and wider for general lighting. Zoom spotlights adjust the angle on site.
IP and IK ratings
IP is protection against dust and water: IP20 for dry interiors, IP54 for wet areas, IP65–IP67 outdoors. IK is impact resistance, important for lights set into the ground.
DALI and Casambi
DALI is the wired standard for dimming and scenes in larger projects. Casambi is Bluetooth control from a phone app, without extra control wiring.

FAQ

Architectural lighting: frequently asked questions

What is architectural lighting?

Architectural lighting is lighting built into the space itself: tracks, recessed downlights, linear profiles and outdoor fixtures planned together with the ceilings, walls and facade, rather than lamps added afterwards. It sets the light levels, accents and mood of an interior.

Which lighting brands does DOMA supply?

Our main architectural line is Nexia, a Spanish manufacturer based near Barcelona, which DOMA supplies in the UAE as a partner. We also source from other European lighting manufacturers when a project needs it.

Do you make lighting calculations?

Yes. Send floor and ceiling plans and we prepare a lighting calculation with light levels for each room, the fixture layout and a luminaire schedule with quantities and prices. The calculation is free when you order the lighting through DOMA.

How long does delivery take?

Lighting from Europe is shipped by air and reaches Dubai in up to 5 days. Production time depends on the product and finish and is confirmed in the quotation.

Can the lights be dimmed or controlled from a phone?

Most ranges come in on/off, DALI and Bluetooth versions. Casambi Bluetooth lets you set scenes from a phone app without extra wiring, and a controller connects the lights to Alexa and Google Home.

Who installs the lighting?

The fixtures are installed by the project's electrical contractor. DOMA delivers to site with all drivers and accessories and provides the technical information for installation.

Do you work with interior designers?

Yes. Designers keep the creative lead and the lighting concept; DOMA does the calculation, pricing, ordering and delivery.

Which areas do you cover?

Dubai, Abu Dhabi and all Emirates, as well as projects across the GCC.
